About Dr. Sukanya Govindan

Dr. Sukanya Govindan is a consultant pediatric nephrologist in Chennai, India. She has received training in paediatrics and nephrology from leading medical schools in India and abroad. She has extensive experience in multidisciplinary management of children with complex kidney diseases with strong focus on children with advanced kidney disease including pediatric dialysis, pediatric renal transplants, immunologically complex renal transplants, and steroid free immunosuppressive protocols in children and young adults. 

She also specializes in long-term preservation of vascular access in children, growth optimization and assisted feeding techniques in infants on dialysis, and serves on the KDIGO South Asia committee for evaluation of kidney donors. 

She is also a clinician researcher with research interests in low-cost renal replacement therapy and acute kidney injury therapeutics in children and beta cell function in patients receiving tacrolimus therapy. She is the primary investigator for a multicentric RCT in neonatal acute kidney injury and a multinational research project looking at gender equity in renal transplants. She is currently leading a taskforce to train pediatric nephrologists and dietitians, as well as strengthening capacity in pediatric renal nutrition in India.
